PROFILE: The W.K. Kellogg Foundation was established in 1930 by 'breakfast cereal pioneer' Will Keith Kellogg. Based in East Battle Creek, Michigan, this foundation 'works with communities to create conditions for vulnerable children so they can realize their full potential in school, work and life.' Its stated priorities are thriving children, working families and equitable communities, and it supports these causes through five funding areas: educated kids, healthy kids, secure families, racial equity and civic engagement.
Kellogg's thriving children program invests in high quality early childhood education for vulnerable children. To this end, the foundation supports schools and community programs that 'are rooted in a community's culture and language,' and that foster parent involvement in education. In Biloxi, Mississippi, the foundation supported the public school district's expansion of pre-K programming for underserved children. Another grantee, the Michigan Early Childhood Investment Corporation, works to improve early childhood education 'through shared services, coaching, technical assistance and training.' Kellogg has also invested in the National Association for the Education of Young Children, which works toward 'advancing and redefining the field of early childhood and professionalizing its workforce.'
Kellogg grants range from $40,000 to about $1.5 million depending on the size and scope of funded projects. The foundation does not set specific geographic limitations to its philanthropy, but prioritizes organizations operating in Michigan; Mississippi; New Mexico; New Orleans, Louisiana, Haiti and Mexico. A database of past grants is available on its website.

OVERVIEW: The W.K. Kellogg Foundation's public health-related giving revolves around food security and the overall health and well-being of children, as well as studying health disparities, especially in its 'priority places,' and closing those disparity gaps.
IP TAKE: Don’t approach Kellogg if your public health work is not substantially related to improving the lives of impoverished children. Also, Kellogg has an open application process, so grantseekers should expect a great deal of competition for funds, here.
PROFILE: W.K. Kellogg Foundation awards grants to organizations working many angles in healthcare. These areas include, but are not limited to, the promotion of breastfeeding, the reduction of infant mortality in traditionally underserved communities, the promotion and provision of oral health care for vulnerable children, and addressing health disparities in low-income neighborhoods.
Kellogg does not have a program dedicated to health and policy access. Grantseekers should plan on exploring the foundation's existing programs to determine where their work best fits within the foundation's grantmaking.
Kellogg’s public health related grants are awarded through its Healthy Kids, Secure Families, Community & Civic Engagement, and Racial Equity programs. Regardless of the specific grantmaking program, all of Kellogg’s public health-related grants have one main concern: the health and well-being of young children. As the foundation states, 'We intentionally place vulnerable children and their families at the center of everything we do and we want the organizations and policies we support to surround them with integrated programs that address the comprehensive needs of children, their families and communities.'

Kellogg's grantmaking priority areas include Mississippi, Michigan, Mexico, New Orleans, New Mexico and Haiti. Grants range from $2,000 to upwards of $4 million—certainly a large spread, but averaging out the number of grants within the total grant amount, we find that the average grant is around $500,000. Which is a pretty good sum.
